Heuristic Optimization Techniques in Operations Research

Applications of Heuristic techniques (like GA and PSO) in solving optimization problems of operations management.

  • Successfully integrated interval arithmetic and Genetic Algorithm to address optimization problems in the fields of 'Systems Reliability', 'Transportation', 'Inventory Management' & Supply Chain Management'.
  • Incorporated methodology for imprecise numbers (that play a crucial role in managerial decision making are generally approached with stochastic, fuzzy and fuzzy-stochasticity) representation by interval numbers.
  • Formulated the inventory problems (considering the effects of displayed stock level and marketing strategies on demand) with interval valued inventory costs like carrying, ordering, purchase, and advertisement costs, and solved the same by Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) and order relations of interval numbers.
  • Formulated advanced payment based inventory problems with interval valued inventory costs and solved with the help of RCGA and order relations of interval numbers.
  • Formulated the transportation problem with flexible transportation cost and interval valued demand and supply parameters and solved by RCGA for integer decision variables.
  • Developed the production-transportation problem with flexible transportation cost and solved using real coded RCGA.
  • Solved the redundancy allocation problems with interval valued components reliabilities under resource constraints by RCGA and interval order relations.

  • For the first time in literature, I have successfully integrated interval arithmetic and Genetic Algorithm to address optimization problems in the fields of 'Systems Reliability', 'Transportation', 'Inventory Management' & Supply Chain Management'.
  • In managerial decision making, Optimization of functions with imprecise numbers plays a crucial role. To define a problem with imprecise numbers, generally stochastic, fuzzy and fuzzy-stochastic approaches are used. In the stochastic approach, the parameters are assumed to be random variables with known probability distribution. In the fuzzy approach, the parameters, constraints and goals are considered as fuzzy sets with known membership functions. On the other hand, in the fuzzy-stochastic approach, some parameters are viewed as fuzzy sets and others, as random variables. However, it is not an easy task for a decision maker to specify the appropriate membership function for the fuzzy approach, probability distribution for the stochastic approach and both for the fuzzy stochastic approach. T0 OVERCOME THESE DIFFICULTIES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY WORK, THE IMPRECISE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN REPRESENTED BY INTERVAL NUMBERS.
  • For the first time I  formulated the inventory problems (considering the effects of displayed stock level and marketing strategies on demand) with interval valued inventory costs like carrying, ordering, purchase, and advertisement costs, and solved the same by Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) and order relations of interval numbers.
  • For the first time I formulated advanced payment based inventory problems with interval valued inventory costs and solved with the help of RCGA and order relations of interval numbers.
  • For the first time I formulated the transportation problem with flexible transportation cost and interval valued demand and supply parameters and solved by RCGA for integer decision variables.
  • For the first time I  developed the production-transportation problem with flexible transportation cost and solved using real coded RCGA.
  • For the first time I solved the redundancy allocation problems with interval valued components reliabilities under resource constraints by RCGA and interval order relations.
